I get the experience of getting stuck in a traffic jam quite often. Ordinarily, there is always traffic congestion in Mumbai. The traffic jam may last for an uncertain period. There are highways and link roads full of traffic jams during peak hours. It was Monday, and I was on my way to the office. Though I started for the office early in the morning, it took over two hours for me to reach my office, which is located in Powai, Mumbai. Without any exact reason, there was traffic congestion on the highway. I tried to take some shortcuts through the Aarey colony, which leads directly to Powai Lake, but it took over 20-30 minutes to get on the Aarey road due to roads under construction. After getting out almost from the bottleneck, there was a huge traffic jam near one side road as a car from the other side collided with one logistics truck. I knew it would take a while to reach the office, so I informed my teammates and manager about this incident and my estimated time arrival ETA. I felt so horrible as I was late to the office and was already getting perspired sitting in the auto feeling tired and dull.

Being stuck in a traffic jam is disheartening as most of the time, people who normally experience this are in a hurry to catch up on a flight or attend an interview. It is frustrating, and sometimes you feel you can turn yourself into a bed and fly to wherever you need to go. I remember I was going for an interview in Accra when I took a bus from the cape. Fortunately for us, the car ran smoothly, and we reached Kasoa, a nearby town in Accra. I was excited because I knew I’d get to the interview on time. It was rather unfortunate that we were caught up in traffic and had to spend hours in it because it was a weekday, and we had many people rushing to get to work. I became so nervous that I picked up my phone to call a friend to find out if he had already reached the premises since he lived close to the area. After about two hours in traffic, I finally reached my destination and got the place. Fortunately for me, I got there a quarter-hour before the interview started.

Answer 1:- Traffic jams are quite frequent in India, especially in Metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi and Bengaluru all-seeing congestion levels of more than 70-80%. Though the pandemic temporarily eased the gridlock in 2020, the city roads are getting choked up again.
Answer 2:- Yes, traffic jams are very common as day in and day out there are an increasing number of vehicles on the street.

Answer 2:- Major big cities in the world today are facing serious traffic issues because of rapid growth in private vehicle ownership, surpassing the population growth rate. On one side, this can be seen as economic development, while on the other side, more vehicles on the road put immense pressure on city infrastructure. Furthermore, there is a negative culture in India of parking cars on the roadways, which causes the unavailability of parking spaces and causes traffic bottlenecks.
Answer 2:- I believe towns are encountering challenges in traffic jams because there’s an increasing worldwide population coupled with the growing demand for vehicles.
Question 3:- What can be done to improve traffic conditions in cities?
Answer 3:- There are some fundamental steps that we all should take toward tackling traffic congestion in Indian cities:
Carpooling is a very good option to reduce our contribution to road traffic, use of Public transport is a way cheaper and less stressful option to ease traffic congestion, and stricter implementation of some of the existing traffic rules can greatly help in improving traffic conditions.
Answer 2:- I believe the government should increase the prices of vehicles and introduce schemes such as car-sharing schemes to help curb this issue. Also, people should be encouraged to ride bicycles instead of riding in cars.
Question 4:- Can developing public transport help resolve traffic issues in cities?
Answer 1:- More use of public transport means fewer private vehicles on the road. That’s the reason why developing public commutes largely helps resolve the traffic congestion. Public transportation can decrease the number of private vehicles to ease traffic congestion, positively impact the environment, and enhance the road network’s cost-effectiveness, reliability, and accessibility.
Answer 2:- Yes, in a way, I think developing public transport can help mitigate the issue of traffic issues drastically, but I believe this can not happen overnight as this strategy would have to take some time before the intended effect can be felt.
