EASY WAY TO LEARN PAST TENSE IN GRAMMAR

 

Tense:- Tense is a form of a verb that indicates the time or a state of an action and event.

OR

     A tense situation or period of time is one that makes people anxious because they do not know what is going to happen next.

There are three types of tense:-

  1. Present Tense 

  2. Past Tense

  3. Future Tense 

Past Tense:

Past tense is used to describe an event or series of events or a habit that has occurred and has been completed in the past, irrespective of the time frame.

There are four types of the Past tense:-

1. Past Indefinite Tense,

2. Past Continuous Tense,  

3. Past Perfect Tense, 

4. Past Perfect Continuous Tense.

 

1.Past Indefinite Tense:

The Simple Past Tense shows that you are talking about something that has already happened. Rules of Past Indefinite Tense with examples:

 

                  Affirmative Tense Rule:-

                                           subject+verb 2nd form+object.

 

Examples:-

1. I drank coffee every morning.
2. Riya worked as a teacher in a school.

3. Children often played video games after school.

 

                   Negative Tense- Rule:-

                                             subject+did not+ verb 1st form+object .

 Examples:- 

1. I  did not drink coffee every morning.

2. Riya did not work as a teacher in a school.

3. Children did not play video games after school.

 

                      Interrogative Tense Rule:-

                                                   Did +subject+verb 1st form+object+?

                                                  < Wh>+Did +subject+verb 1st form+object+?

                           <wh> family:- what, why, when, where, who, whom, whose, which, and how.

Examples:-

1. Did I drink coffee?

2. Did Riya work as a teacher in a school?

3. What did you drink?

     Interrogative+ negative Tense Rule:-

                                     Did +subject+ not+verb 1st form+object+?

                                    < Wh>+Did+subject+ not+verb 1st form+object+?

                                           <wh> family:- what, why, when, where, who, whom, whose, which, and how.

 

Examples:-

1. Did I not drink coffee?

2. Did Riya not work as a teacher in a school?

3. What did you not drink tea?

 

2. Past Continuous Tense:-

The Past Continuous is also known as the past progressive tense, describes continuous events that happened in the past. Rules of Past Continuous Tense with examples:-

 

         Affirmative Tense Rule:- 

                             subject+was/were+verb 1st form+ ing +object.

 

Use of “Was”:- The helping verb “was” is used with Singular ( such as Noun, He, She, It  ).

 Use of “were”:- The helping verb”were” is used with Plural (such as They, We, You).

Examples:-

1. I was drinking coffee.
2. We were having breakfast.

3. It was raining outside.

 

              Negative Tense:- Rule:- 

                              subject+ was/were+ not +verb 1st form+ing +object.

1. I was not drinking coffee.
2. We were not having breakfast.

3. It was not raining outside.

 

                Interrogative Tense Rule:-

                                       Was/Were+subject+verb 1st form+ ing+object+?

                                      < Wh>+was/were+subject+verb 1st form+ ing+object+?

                           <wh> family:- what, why, when, where, who, whom ,whose, which, and how.

Examples:-

1. Was I drinking coffee?
2.  Were we having breakfast?

3. Was it raining outside?

4. Where were you going?

 3. Past Perfect Tense:-

The Past Perfect Tense indicates that an action was completed at some point in the Past before something else happened.

Rules of Past Perfect Tense with examples:-

 

                 Affirmative Tense Rule:- 

                                subject+had+verb 3rd form +object.

Examples:-

1. I had finished my work.

2. We had gone to Delhi.

3. She had received my letter.

 

                Negative Tense Rule:- 

                           subject+ had+ not+verb 3rd form +object.

1. I had not finished my work.

2. We had not gone to Delhi.

3. She had not received my letter.

4.Past Perfect Continuous Tense:-

The Past Perfect Continuous Tense shows action that was ongoing in the past and ended before another past action.

Rules of Past Perfect Continuous Tense with examples:-

 

             Affirmative Tense Rule:-

                          subject+ had+ been+verb1st form+ing +object+for/since.

Use of “for”:-When exact time of work or verb has not given, then “for” is used in the sentence.

Use of “since”:-When exact time of work or verb has given, then   “since” is used in the sentence.

Examples:-

1. I had been waiting to see the doctor for two hours.

2. We had been living in this town since 1980.

3. I had been going to Delhi for four hours.

 

          Negative Tense Rule:- subject+had+not+ been+verb1st form+ing +object+for/since.

Examples:-

1. I had not been waiting to see the doctor for two hours.

2. We had not been living in this town since 1980.

3. He had not been going to Delhi for four hours.

 

    Interrogative Tense Rule:- Had+subject+ been+verb1st form+ing +object+for/since+?

       <wh> family:- what, why, when, where, who, whom, whose, which, and how.

 

Examples:-

1. Hadbeen waiting to see the doctor for two hours?

2. Had we been living in this town since 1980?

3. Had he been going to Delhi for four hours?

4. When had he been going to Mumbai for two days?

 

 Interrogative+Negative Tense Rule:-

                        Had+subject+not+been+verb 1st form+ing+object+for/since+? 

                     < Wh>+had+subject+not+been+verb 1st form+ing+object+for/since+? 

                             <wh> family:- what, why, when, where, who, whom, whose, which, and how.
