‘Celebrity status no longer equates with talent/ accomplishments’. discuss.
One has but to look to the gossip magazines to see what type of person qualifies as a ‘celebrity’ today. the majority of so-called celebrities derive from tv reality shows or qualify for ‘celeb’ status as they have achieved recognition in a talent show. few stand the test of time. look at any gossip magazine from over a decade ago to see how few ‘celeb’ is still enjoying the limelight today. chances are, you will fail to recognize most celebrities. the reason is simple: quality stands the test of time and most modern celebrities are lacking precisely in that attribute. their success stems more from luck and society’s readiness to bestow celebrity status on even mediocre talent rather than any real talent.
In past eras, celebrity status was attributed to great politicians or benefactors of society. such individuals earned their position in society through sheer hard work and perseverance. those in the field of entertainment or music had to be truly outstanding, and exhibit real genius to be recognized as a celebrity. virtuoso violinist, Paganini, and pianist and composer, Franz Liszt, were such musical celebrities of bygone areas.
Today the majority of celebrities that have a disproportional representation in the music industry could not hold a candle to these two geniuses. celebrity status is also indiscriminately thrust upon those who are famous for looks alone, such as top-models and tv presenters, or those who emerged winners from reality tv shows. talent and accomplishments are not even part of the celebrity equation.
The upshot of such accessible instant fame is that reality tv and talent shows are becoming increasingly popular. individuals without substantial talent are enjoying celebrity status, thereby encouraging others to follow suit.
In conclusion, in a culture, that rewards mediocrity with fame, there is little motivation for the individual to develop a talent or achieve anything worthwhile. only when society begins to value genuinely talented individuals will the tide begin to turn and we will see celebrities that have truly merited their status.
