Stories have always been an integral part of Indian culture, and every generation grows up listening to tales that carry deep moral lessons. Among the countless stories I have heard, one that left a long lasting impression on me is “Think Before You Speak.” It may sound simple, but the message it conveys is extremely powerful and relevant even today.
I have always been interested in listening to stories because it not only boosts my language and emotional development but also enhances my imagination and creativity. I first heard this story from my grandmother when I was a child. She used to narrate such moral stories at night before we went to bed, and this one in particular has stayed with me ever since. Later, I also read a simpler version of it in a children’s storybook.
The story goes like this: once, a young boy carelessly spoke hurtful words to his friend during an argument. The friend felt deeply insulted and distanced himself. When the boy realized his mistake, he went to his teacher for advice. The teacher gave him a tube of toothpaste and asked him to squeeze it out completely. After the boy did so, the teacher asked him to put all the paste back into the tube. Of course, it was impossible. The teacher then explained that words are just like toothpaste—once they come out, you cannot take them back. This taught the boy, and also the listeners of the story, the importance of controlling our speech and thinking carefully before saying anything.
I particularly like this story because it delivers a strong life lesson in a very simple manner. It reminds us that while we may forget what we say, others may remember our words for a long time, especially if they are harsh. Even today, whenever I am about to react angrily, this story crosses my mind and helps me stay calm.
For me , “Think Before You Speak” is not just a children’s tale; it’s a timeless reminder of the power of words and why we should use them wisely.
