Nowadays People Use Bicycles Less as A Form of Transport. Why Is This the Case? What Can We Do to Encourage People to Use Bicycles More? Give Reasons for Your Answer and Include Any Relevant Examples from Your Own Knowledge or Experience.
Nowadays, the choice of a particular means of transportation is of major concern. Several studies have shown that, despite the rapid population growth in cities with high traffic levels, bicycles receive little attention. This is because this mode of transportation is slower and less secure than others, such as cars, trains, or planes. For instance, many activities can be carried out to promote the widespread use of bicycles. These include, but are not limited to, rules establishing limits on car access in certain communities and training informing the population of the importance of bicycles in road traffic management.
Many reasons explain why many people do not use bicycles. Here, for instance, our attention is focused on security and the speed of displacement. Firstly, bicycles are less secure than other means of transportation, such as cars. While riding a bicycle, the driver is completely exposed, and any misbehaviour can lead to their death. In addition, bicycles are lightweight. Therefore, they can lead to accidents, especially when sharing roads with big and high-speed cars. In the city of Douala, for example, the passage of camions by the side of young children moving with bicycles at high speed makes them fall, thereby leading to their death. Secondly, bicycles are moving very slowly. Bicycling long distances is time-consuming. For example, it takes 4 to 6 hours by car from Douala to Yaounde, and even a whole day by bicycle.
Despite the disabilities mentioned above, these means of transportation are important, and their use needs to be advertised. By doing so, the government can create laws preventing people from driving in certain areas of cities. This will then require everyone to buy a bicycle to get to work. If people are prohibited from going to Bonandjo, Akwa and Bonamoussadi with cars, for example, which are the major workplaces in the city of Douala, then the high traffic rate found in this economic city will decrease. Another way to promote the widespread use of bicycles is to organise training and informative seminars to inform the public about the importance of bicycles for road traffic management. In fact, if many people are aware that cycling is the only way to get to the workplace as quickly as possible, most of them will buy one.
In summary, this essay aims to provide reasons why bicycles are not widely used as a means of transportation today and to propose approaches to encourage their use. On the one hand, their lower security and slower speed can explain their low utilisation rate. On the other hand, several approaches can be applied to encourage their use, such as establishing rules limiting car access in certain communities and training the population on the importance of bicycles in road traffic management.
