Sample Answer of Describe Something Important that Has Been Kept in Your Family for A Long Time

I want to talk about one incident which happened almost six years back, in 2015. It’s all about the disputed land between my father and one of his brothers. In 1996, when I was around 7 to 8 years old, my grandfather died, and he wrote a will in which he clearly stated that the disputed property, which was close to the highway, belonged to my father. But somehow that paper got misplaced and around 2000-2001, till this time it was a joint family, all the brothers actually decided to separate. This was the time that uncle claimed that the land belonged to him as the cost of that land was almost equal to all other property’s cost what my grandfather had, that much pricey that land was. So, due to this heavy cost, he was very much after that area.

When my father got to know his intentions, he also became resilient and decided to fight this battle against his brother in court. Then, he hired a lawyer and took some suggestions from him, like how to replicate the original document so that they could prove in the court that he was the successor of that particular area. They went to the registrar office of that village and somehow managed to make that paper. Then, they filed a case against my uncle in the nearby court, and this dispute went on for almost 20 years; that is, finally, in 2015, we won the case.

But, till this time, as I already mentioned that this was a hot property and an enormous price tag was labelled, we had seen lots of ugly fights between my father and his brother, and at one point in time, he was distraught. But, with God’s grace, the decision came in our favour, and that time, he finally took a sigh of relief. So, this episode is something that has always lingered and imprinted a horrific experience on everyone’s mind in my family.

Follow-ups of Describe Something Important that Has Been Kept in Your Family for A Long Time

Question 1. Which do you think are better, old things or new things?

Answer:-  My take on this is, it totally depends on a person’s mindset and outlook because there are many old things in my house which we like and keep as it, whereas few things which we loathed, we discarded them. The same case goes with new things also like if we are buying something and obviously when we like then only we buy but if that thing doesn’t turn out to be something good, then obviously we try to remove that from our life. So, in short, it totally depends on a person’s feelings.

Question 2. Why do you think people keep these things?

Answer:- Not sure about other people, but yes, what I have experienced in my life is, it basically reflects some kind of old happy memory like trophies or relates to some kind of special gift given to us like, I got an album from one of my aunts. So, it gives us an opportunity to reminisce about a past life or that past moment.

Question 3. As well as family photographs, what are some other things that people keep in their family for a long time?

Answer:- There are many old things which people always preserve so that they can go back in time and always think about those happy moments like in my case, my mum has a cupboard which she has got from her dad, and it is there in her bedroom. Apart from this, she has many antique utensils, which my grandma had given, and she has maintained them as it is and used them to decorate the house during occasions. So, overall it’s all about your past memories collection.

Question 4. In your culture, what sorts of things do people often pass down from generation to generation? (Why?)

Answer:- As per my experience, what I have seen in my family is that my grandmother had given my mum some jewellery, then the same thing my mum had passed on to my sisters when they got married. So, apart from that, there are a few things in terms of these vessels, antique utensils which are quite unique in design.

Question 5. What are the benefits (= what is the value/what is the importance) of keeping some old things in the family?

Answer:- Well, one significance I can think of is, when all of your family members sit at one place, in a group and bantering with each other, then these old things become a centre of attention because we can talk about many pasts related events which we did, and which were humorous and somewhat embarrassing in nature.

Question 6. Do you think it’s good to recall the past?

Answer:- It totally depends on the person’s past, that is, if that is something which brings blissful feelings and smiles on your face, then definitely it’s worth to think and discuss it. Whereas, if it is sorrowful, then it’s better to refrain from those thoughts.
