EASY WAY TO LEARN PRESENT TENSE IN GRAMMAR

Tense:- Tense is a form of a verb that indicates the time or a state of an action and event.

OR

     A tense situation or period of time is one that makes people anxious because they do not know what is going to happen next.

There are three types of tense:-

  1. Present Tense 

  2. Past Tense

  3. Future Tense 

 Present Tense:-

Present tense is the form of language used to refer to an event transaction or occurrence which is happening at the present or an object that currently exists.

There are four types of the present tense:-

1. Present Indefinite Tense,

2. Present Continuous Tense,  

3. Present Perfect Tense, 

4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense.

 

1. Present Indefinite Tense:

The Present Indefinite Tense is used to express or an action that happens daily. Rules of Present Indefinite Tense with examples:-

 

                  Affirmative Tense Rule:- 

                                               subject+verb 1st form +s/es+object.

Use of “s” and”es”:- The helping verb  “s” and “es” are used with  ( such as Noun, He, She, It  )

Use of verb 1st form with They, We, You, I and plural.

Examples:-

1. I drink coffee every morning.
2. Riya works as a teacher in a school.

3. Children often play video games after school.

 

                   Negative Tense- Rule:-

                                   subject+ do/does +not+object .

Use of “do”:- the  helping verb “do” is used with Plural (such as They, We, You, I )

Use of “does”:- the  helping verb”does”  is used with Singular ( such as Noun, He, She, It  )

 Examples:- 

1. I  do not drink coffee every morning.

2. Riya does not work as a teacher in a school.

3. Children do not play video games after school.

 

                 Interrogative Tense Rule:-

                                       Do /Does +subject+verb 1st form+object+?

                                      < Wh>+Do /Does +subject+verb 1st form+object+?

                           <wh> family:- what, why, when, where, who, whom, whose, which, and how.

Examples:-

          Interrogative+ negative Tense Rule:-

                                        Do /Does +subject+ not+verb 1st form+object+?

                                     < Wh>+Do /Does +subject+ not+verb 1st form+object+?

           <wh> family:- what, why, when, where, who, whom, whose, which, and how.

Examples:-

1. Do I not drink coffee?

2. Does Riya not work as a teacher in a school?

3. what do you not drink tea?

 

2. Present Continuous Tense:-

Present Continuous Tense is used to describe a continued or an ongoing action of the present. Rules of Present Continuous Tense with examples:-

 

         Affirmative Tense Rule:- 

                             subject+ is/am/are+verb 1st form+ing +object.

Use of”is”:- The helping verb “is” is used with Singular ( such as Noun, He, She, It  ).

Use of “am”:- The helping verb “am” is only used with  I.

Use of “are”:- the helping verb”are” is used with Plural (such as They, We, You).

Examples:-

1. I am drinking coffee.
2. We are having breakfast.

3. It is raining outside.

 

              Negative Tense:- Rule:- 

                                 subject+ is/am/are+ not +verb 1st form+ing +object.

 

Examples:-

1. I am not drinking coffee.
2. We are not having breakfast.

3. It is not raining outside.

                Interrogative Tense Rule:-Is/Am/Are+subject+verb 1st form+ ing+object+?

                                                  < Wh>+is/am/are +subject+verb 1st form+ ing+object+?

                           <wh> family:- what, why, when, where, who, whom ,whose, which, and how.

Examples:-

1. Am I drinking coffee?
2.  Are we having breakfast?

3. Is it raining outside?

  1. Where are you going?

 3. Present Perfect Tense:-

Present Perfect Tense is used to express an action that occurred or completed at some point in the past. Though, the time of action is not exactly known this tense is mostly used to refer to actions completed in the recent past (not a very long time ago).

Rules of Present Perfect Tense with examples:-

 

                 Affirmative Tense Rule:- 

                               subject+ Has/Have+verb 3rd form +object.

Use of “has”:- the helping verb  “has” is used with Singular ( such as Noun, He, She, It  )

Use of “have”:- the helping verb”have” is used with Plural (such as They, We, You, I )

Examples:-

1. I have finished my work.

2. We have gone to Delhi.

3. She has received my letter.

1. I have not finished my work.

2. We have not gone to Delhi.

3. She has not received my letter.

4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense:

This tense expresses an action that started in past and continued to present. It is used to state ongoing action that has started at a point in the past.

Rules of Present Perfect Continuous Tense with examples:-

 

             Affirmative Tense Rule:- subject+ Has/Have+ been+verb1st form+ing +object+for/since.

Use of “for”:-When exact time of work or verb has not given, then “for” is used in the sentence.

Use of “since”:-When exact time of work or verb has given, than “since” is used in the sentence.

Examples:-

1. I have been waiting to see the doctor for two hours.

2. We have been living in this town since 1980.

3. I have been going to Delhi for four hours.

 

          Negative Tense Rule:-

                    subject+ Has/Have+not+ been+verb1st form+ing +object+for/since.

Examples:-

1. I have not been waiting to see the doctor for two hours.

2. We have not been living in this town since 1980.

3. He has not been going to Delhi for four hours.

 

    Interrogative Tense Rule:- 

                   Has/Have+subject+ been+verb1st form+ing +object+for/since+?

               <Wh>+Has/Have+subject+ been+verb1st form+ing +object+for/since+?

                      <wh> family:- what, why, when, where, who, whom, whose, which, and how.

 

Examples:-
