Academic Writing Task 1
The diagrams below illustrate the public park when it first opened in 1980 and the same park today. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
General Writing Task 1
You are a senior student at a large university. You have noticed that while the university has excellent academic facilities, the student welfare and mental health services are severely under-resourced, leading to high levels of stress among the student body. Write a highly formal and constructive letter to the Head of University Administration. In your letter:
- Explain the current problem with student welfare services and its negative impact on academic performance.
- Suggest two specific, low-cost ways the university could immediately improve its mental health support.
- Propose a long-term strategy for properly funding and staffing these essential services.
General / Academic Writing Task 2
Some people believe that individuals should be fully responsible for all of their own life outcomes, including successes and failures, as this motivates personal effort. Others argue that society and government must share responsibility for citizens’ well-being because factors like social background and global economics are beyond individual control. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion, supported by examples.
ACADEMIC / GENERAL SPEAKING
Part 1 Truth and Lying
- Do you think it is ever acceptable to tell a “white lie”? Why or why not?
- In what situations is telling the complete truth most important?
- Do you believe people today are more or less honest than they were in the past?
- How do you usually know if someone is telling you the truth?
- Do you think children should be taught the importance of honesty from a very young age?
Part 2 Cue Card
Describe a time when you had to take an unconventional approach to solve a problem. You should say:
- What the problem was.
- What the conventional (usual) solution would have been.
- What unconventional method you chose.
- And explain why your unconventional approach was successful.
Part 3 Questions
- Do you think that modern life has become too complicated, creating more problems than previous generations faced?
- What role does failure play in the process of successful problem-solving and innovation?
- Should schools focus more on teaching practical, real-world problem-solving skills rather than purely theoretical knowledge?
- In what ways can governments encourage citizens and businesses to find innovative solutions to national problems (e.g., traffic or energy)?
- Do you believe that younger generations are inherently more creative in solving problems than older generations?
- How important is collaboration when solving global issues like climate change or pandemics?
