Ans:

If you choose to live in a foreign country, it is usually for one or more of three reasons: you are working or studying in the country or you have decided to settle down and marry there. for all of these reasons, a knowledge of the resident country is a requisite. whilst in-depth knowledge may not be necessary for all such situations, a passing knowledge, at the very least, is required. this is not purely for the benefit of the individual concerned but also for the natives with whom the individual interacts.

Working in a foreign culture is the situation that demands the greatest knowledge of the resident country’s history and culture. doing business deals with a non-existent or low level of cultural awareness of the country you are residing in is fraught with pitfalls. misunderstandings can arise over negotiating techniques, body language and even the simple act of giving corporate gifts. it is easy to mistakenly cause offense with business clientele if there is a lack of cultural understanding. with regard to history, an ignorance of the resident country’s historical background could be seen as offensive at the very least. in fields of work, such as the civil service or law, such an omission in knowledge would be more serious, as such knowledge is intrinsic to these professions.

In situations where a foreigner has come to study or live with a spouse in another country, knowledge of the basic culture is important to permit better integration into society. ignorance of unwritten cultural codes of conduct will soon cause offense and alienate newcomers in the foreign country. although a knowledge of the country’s history is not a requisite, a rudimentary knowledge is at least recommended to show a willingness to integrate and be accepted.

It is obvious therefore that to a greater or lesser extent that foreigners need to be aware of their resident country’s history and culture. having taken the huge step of deciding to reside in a foreign country for a significant period, it makes sense to make the extra effort to learn about the country’s culture and history, too. it is foolhardy to do otherwise.

Young people in the modern world seem to have more power and influence than any previous young generation. why is this the case? what impact does this have on the relationship between old and young people?
