In most states, especially in Welfare states, the government is obliged to cater to the needs of the populace. Retirement is a period where one has served and is leaving the workforce. In many countries, the retirement age is 60 years.
The government is responsible for paying retirees, as during their period of service, an amount is deducted from their salaries for social security contributions toward their pension. If they are now retired, it is the government’s responsibility to repay them. Also, people in retirement are older and thus too weak to work. They have served diligently, and in their old age, the state must reward them.
Furthermore, it is more prudent for the government to spend on retirees than to have the same funds embezzled by a corrupt politician. When retirees receive money from the government, the whole nation benefits directly or indirectly, but when a thieving politician steals money from the state’s coffers, he or she only stands to benefit.
On the other side of the coin, people who may not support the government’s support for retirees may do so because they think retirees are unproductive to the economy. Currently, this may be the case, but retirees were once part of the workforce and have contributed their share to the state’s development.
I second with the school of thought which believes retirees should be looked after by the government because the money they are being paid is the money that was taken from them. Also, it is better to give money to old people than to a government appointee to mismanage it. Also, retired people are frail and need help.
