The chart below shows estimated world literacy rates by region and by gender for the year 2000

Overall, the literacy rate in developed countries was minimum, whereas it was highest in south Asia. The gender-wise literacy rate was more in females than in males.

In developed countries, the education rate was lowest, around 1-2% in both males and females. For Latin America/ Caribbean and East Asia/ Oceania, rates among males were 10% and 8%, respectively, whereas, for Females, rates in East Asia/ Oceania (20%) were almost double as compared to Latin America/ Caribbean ( nearly 11%).

The number of Educated men in Sub-Saharan Africa, Arab states and South Asia was close to each other, such as 30%, Just below it and a bit above 30%, respectively. Women’s education rate in Sub-Saharan Africa was slightly less than 50%. However, it reached more than half a century in the Arab States and South Asia, with South Asian women scoring highest among everyone (around 55%)
