The tables below give information about sales of Fairtrade*-labelled coffee and bananas in 1999 and 2004 in five European countries.


The table illustrates the sales data of bananas and Fairtrade-labelled coffee in millions of euros in 1999 and 2004 in the UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium and Sweden. Overall, the sales increased in the entire period except for bananas in Belgium and Sweden.

Not only did the UK see a significant increase in sales of Fairtrade-labelled coffee from 1.5 to 20, but bananas increased from 15 to 47 from 1999 to 2004. Switzerland, too, witnessed an increase in sales of Fairtrade-labelled coffee from 3 to 6 and bananas from 1 to 5.5 in the period. Denmark saw a gradual increase in sales of bananas from 0.6 to 4.

Belgium had a good increase in sales of coffee of 0.7 in the timespan. The increase in sales of Fairtrade-labelled coffee in Denmark and Sweden is negligible. Belgium and Sweden saw a decrease in the sale of bananas from 1.8 to 1 and 2 to 0.9 from 1999 to 2004.
